Environment: Don't waste a chance to make a difference
Nearly 90 per cent of people who recycle waste products in the Lothians
are happy with the facilities available, but many still want to be able
to do more to recycle plastic, food scraps and even batteries. In a specially-commissioned
survey by the Evening News, it was revealed that 94 per cent thought that
it was important to take positive personal action to help protect the environment,
including recycling, with almost 90 per cent believing that human actions
are to blame for global warming.
The poll of 744 Evening News readers revealed that 88 per cent rated their
recycling facilities highly, with 95 per cent recycling paper, 89.9 per
cent glass and 82.9 per cent metal cans.

SSE announces plan for Scotland’s largest biogas plant
SSE has completed a £13.5 million deal signalling the start of construction of Scotland’s largest biogas plant at a former Landfill site at Barkip, North Ayrshire. The deal makes SSE the first energy company in the UK to commit to construction and operation of an anaerobic digestion biogas plant of this type and is expected to be operational by 2011.

Ochiltree Primary get Eco Boost from the Partnership of Local Companies

Stagecoach Group has launched a new sustainability strategy with a plan to reduce further the carbon emissions from its transport operations in the UK and North America.
The transport group is backing up the new strategy, Revolution in the Way We Travel, with an £11million investment programme and a range of targets for its bus and rail businesses.

BT targets Scotland for green energy drive
BT Wind for Change, believed to be the UK’s largest corporate renewable energy project outside the energy sector, is gearing up for major investment in Scotland. BT’s large-scale, on-shore wind project, which aims to develop 250MW of wind capacity, is set for a major push in Scotland on the back of the Scottish Government’s decision to give the Beauly to Denny electricity transmission line the go ahead.

Stagecoach Group awarded Carbon Trust Standard
Stagecoach Group has been awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard after taking action on climate change by measuring and reducing its carbon emissions. The Group reduced the carbon intensity of its UK businesses by 5.7% in the three years to 30 April 2009 as a result of a package of measures designed to make its business more sustainable. Stagecoach is the first Scottish-based transport group – and one of only two listed UK public transport operators – to have achieved the stretching carbon reduction benchmark. It covers all of the Group’s bus and rail operations in the UK.

Key Business Heads to Ensure Achievement of Climate Change Delivery Plan
A group created to ensure the full realisation of Scotland’s Climate Change Delivery Plan has been created – a gathering of experts in their fields who are to ensure Scotland will meet the proposed 42% emission reduction target.
The group will make certain that all sectors of Scotland’s economy and civic society contribute fully to achieving the Climate Change Delivery Plan over the next decade and is convened by Scottish and Southern Energy Chief Executive Ian Marchant.
