Victoria Barby – a new role

Well here I am, working for the 2020 Group! When I first started getting involved with the Climate Change Business Delivery Group back in 2006 I never imagined that we’d evolve into such a pragmatic, practical and wide ranging organisation. The dinners, discussions and debates were just as passionate and enthusiastic then as they are now, but the group has matured and developed just like the whisky the Group commissioned to represent Scotland’s 42% reduction target.

I feel very honoured to be part of the Group, and to be part of its journey going forward. I see the Group continuing to grow and evolve and cement itself into Scotland’s culture. I see a need to reach further out to SMEs and the general public, and to further develop actions to deliver against the targets. Essentially I see the Group moving from being like a start up to becoming a more established organisation, focused on delivery.

I have only ever worked in business, so although I am a complete ‘greenie’ by heart, I will definitely be taking a business perspective within the Group. I truly believe that the business case and business opportunities for organisations to reduce their climate change impacts should encourage all business to do their bit.

I know I have big shoes to fill; Martin has been an inspiration and a bit of a mentor to me since I first worked with him writing Noise Action Plans more than 5 years ago. I have learnt a lot from him, but I am different from him and will do things in a slightly different way to the way he has. The agenda for change for the Group, the change in team structure and Ian’s new lifestyle means that my role will need to be different from Martin’s anyway.

However the Group evolves and changes, whatever challenges we face; I am looking forward to getting to know all you group members better and helping support you and your companies deliver towards Scotland’s targets.

Here’s to 2020!
