Motorway charge points could take electric cars onto the open road

A network of rapid charging points that can recharge an electric car in around 15 minutes are to be installed in motorway service stations around the country. Conventional charging points usually take several hours to provide enough power for modern electric cars. Deal to turn whisky ‘leftovers’ into biofuel for cars

A deal has been signed to turn by-products from a Scottish distillery into fuel for cars. In what is claimed to be a world first, the Tullibardine distillery in Perthshire has linked up with a spin-out company from Napier University in Edinburgh. They plan to use bacteria to feed on the “leftovers” from the whisky making process. This will produce butanol which can be used to fuel vehicles.

High Five! Momentous month for onshore wind

RenewableUK, the trade and professional body for the wind and marine energy industries, is celebrating this month’s achievement of 5 gigawatts of wind energy installed onshore. The 5GW milestone was reached with the operation of AES’s 28.6MW Scottish Borders project, less than 18 months after construction commenced. This will generate enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 14,700 homes.

2020 Climate Group releases Countdown Clock

The Countdown to 2020 Clock ‘widget’ is now available for use on any website. 2020 Climate Group Project Manager Martin Valenti said: “Releasing the Countdown Clock gives organisations, groups and even individuals the opportunity to use it on their websites and demonstrate their commitment to reducing carbon emissions in Scotland by 42% by 2020.
