Wind power generates 33% more clean electricity for British homes

It’s official – statistics just released by the Department of Energy and Climate Change show a massive leap in the amount of clean electricity being generated for British homes, businesses and factories by wind power. DECC says wind energy output increased by 33% in 2012 compared to the previous year, due to the extra capacity provided by new UK wind farms going operational onshore and offshore. Scotland offers flood of support for wave and tidal power

Scotland has announced a £4.1m boost to the development of marine renewables, as a major new survey was today launched to assess the environmental impact of tidal turbines. Fergus Ewing, Scotland’s minister, confirmed today that Orkney’s European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) would receive funding for a new testing berth, allowing developers to prove their devices in real-life sea conditions. Hydrogen’s energy promise improves

A new process for extracting hydrogen from a liquid fuel could sweep aside one obstacle to a “hydrogen economy”. Hydrogen produced from renewable resources is a promising source of clean energy, but the gas is difficult to handle and transport. An international team has now published details of an efficient, low-temperature method for generating it from methanol. This can then be used to produce electricity using a fuel cell. Manchester United crashes down the carbon reduction league table

Manchester United has plummeted from first place in the UK’s Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) league table to 488th place, after Bam Group, Motorola, and Skanska seized the top spots in the controversial ranking of just over 2,000 organisations. The Environment Agency today published the long-awaited final edition of the CRC Performance League Table (PLT), which ranks organisations based on their energy efficiency performance for 2011/12.
