BT’s Better Future 2012 report now published

BT’s Better Future 2012 report has now been published. It outlines progress on one of BT’s strategic priorities - to be a responsible and sustainable business leader.

The Better Future 2012 report shows how BT is transforming its business with a particular focus on three areas:

1. Helping people to be better connected through our technology and network. Examples include:

  • Investing £2.5bn to deliver fibre broadband to two-thirds of the UK by the end of 2014. There’s the potential to take fibre to more than 90% of the UK by bidding for the Broadband Delivery UK funds and working with local councils and devolved authorities.
  • In 2012 BT helped more than 110,000 people get online who’ve never had access to digital services before.

2. Helping people to be ‘better with less’ by delivering lower carbon ways to connect.

  • BT is the first company in the world to have its product carbon footprints independently verified by the Carbon Trust to the new international GHG Protocol Product Standard.[1]
  • It has also cut its own carbon footprint through reduced energy use, which was down 3.3% in 2011/12 - a £21.9m cost saving for the business.

3. Helping people live better lives through delivering essential digital services.

  • In 2011/12 BT helped raise £38.5m for our charity partners through our telethon efforts. This was achieved by using core expertise to provide infrastructure, network management, online giving platforms (MyDonate for telethons), contact centres and volunteers. BT also contributed to donations through employee fundraising efforts such as Sport Relief 2012.

[1] The GHG Protocol Product Standard gives a globally consistent approach to measuring and managing product emissions. It was developed by a number of ICT companies and other interested stakeholders in collaboration with the Carbon Trust, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI).
