Rio+20 Conference
Twenty years on from the first Earth Summit, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development returns to Rio.
At the Rio+20 Conference on 20-22 June 2012, world leaders, along with thousands of participants from governments, the private sector, NGOs and other groups, will come together to shape how we can reduce poverty, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection on an ever more crowded planet to get to the future we want.
Rio+20 will be one of the most important global meetings on sustainable development in our time.
– UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
Objective & Themes
The objective of the Conference is to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges.
The Conference will focus on two themes:
- a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and
- the institutional framework for sustainable development.
