Countdown to 2020

The Innovation sub-group is structured to help find solutions to new challenges in meeting the climate goals set out by the Scottish Government. It looks to apply new methods and fresh insights to the major behavioural, infrastructure and skills challenges relating to a low carbon economy in Scotland.

In 2014, the group has decided to focus on emerging the opportunities and risk arising from big data, open data, heat infrastructure, community renewables and new business start up / growth. The group has an effective balance of members from large industry, small business, Government, NGOs and the voluntary sector.

Stephen Boyle

Programme Area Manager | Resource Efficient Scotland

Stephen is the Programme Area Manager (Business Sector) at Resource Efficient Scotland (RES) and is responsible for the strategic direction of the RES service for the business sector.

Stephen has worked for more than 25 years in the area of environmental regulation and management. He qualified as a Chemist in 1989 and worked for over 15 years in the laboratories of Scottish environment protection bodies before moving into various policy positions with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). In 2008 he left SEPA to move into consultancy and for 5 years delivered projects for the Carbon Trust, Scottish and UK Governments and numerous private businesses. He is now the Business Sector Manager of the Resource Efficient Scotland Programme, leading a team of Account Managers and Project Managers in delivering support on resource efficiency to small, medium and large businesses across the whole of Scotland.

Brian Galloway

Energy Policy Director | Scottish Power

Brian Galloway is Energy Policy Director at ScottishPower, responsible for wholesale and retail market regulation, compliance policy, EU energy policy development and relationships with Scottish Government. He also leads ScottishPower input to environmental strategy and innovation policy in the UK.

Brian has worked in ScottishPower since 1987 and in that time has worked in all of the operational business units and many Corporate functions including Finance, Strategy, Risk Management and Regulation. He spent three years on international assignment in Portland, Oregon with Pacificorp.

Adrian Gillespie (Co-Chair of Innovation sub-group)

Managing Director of Operations | Scottish Enterprise

In April 2013, Adrian Gillespie was appointed Managing Director of Operations – Company Growth, Innovation & Infrastructure, and is a member of Scottish Enterprise’s Executive Leadership Team.

From August 2009, Adrian was Senior Director of Energy and Low Carbon Technologies for Scottish Enterprise with responsibility for working with industry to establish and deliver clear priorities for investment and growth in these sectors, with a particular focus on offshore energy. Prior to this Adrian was Senior Director of the Digital Media, ICT and Enabling Technologies sectors for Scottish Enterprise. Adrian spent 10 years in commercial and financial management positions within Marks and Spencer plc before joining Scottish Enterprise,

Adrian has a Bachelor of Accountancy degree from Glasgow University and an MBA from the University of Strathclyde. He is currently a Board Member of the Scottish European Green Energy Centre (SEGEC).

Gordon McGregor (Co-Chair of Innovation sub-group)

Managing Direcor | Independent Member

Gordon is Managing Director of Edinburgh based technology business Spot Sensor Technologies Ltd. He has more than two decades of experience working in the energy and utility sector, but most recently he served as Environment and Innovation Director at ScottishPower plc (part of the international energy group IBERDROLA) where he led the company’s efforts on environmental management, regulation and R&D for the group, overall.

He has a wide experience of working on major infrastructure projects, engaging with regulators, dealing with Government and working in partnership with other large businesses / NGOs. He recently served as chair of the Government’s Electric Vehicle Strategy Board, on the Council of the CBI in Scotland and on the board of the Scottish European Green Energy Centre.

He has a passion for the natural environment, is a champion for clean energy and a strong advocate for habitat protection.
Gordon has a BEng In Electronic Engineering from the University of Glasgow, an MBA from Heriot Watt University and an LLM (Distinction) from the University of Aberdeen.

Ewan Mearns

Senior Manager in the Strategy and Economics | Scottish Enterprise

Ewan Mearns is a Senior Manager in the Strategy and Economics Team within Scottish Enterprise where he leads SE’s policy approach towards stimulating the low carbon economy. He has over 20 years experience in economic development, focusing on strategy and policy development, innovation, research and project development, working closely across Government, with industry bodies and other policy makers at EU and UK levels. His current role covers SE’s policy leadership for the low carbon economy, leadership development and workplace innovation, tourism, rural development and horizon scanning. Ewan was previously a member of the 2020 Group’s Opportunities and Challenges Sub-group and represents SE on a number of other relevant groups including the ClimateXChange, Edinburgh Business Forum Sustainability Group, and the Officers Group supporting the Public Sector Climate Leaders’ Forum.

Linda Pooley

Head of Unit for Energy, Technology & Investment. | Scottish Government

Linda graduated from Imperial College London in Biochemistry. Following an academic career, she joined the Scottish Government in 2003 initially working as a scientific adviser before moving into policy work.

Linda has worked on climate change policy and also in the water industry team where she had responsibility for the government’s interactions with Scottish Water’s large capital investment programme.

Linda moved to the Energy Division last year where she heads up two teams: the offshore renewable team and the International, low carbon and constitution team. She is also the Scottish government’s policy lead for the Green Investment Bank, is actively involved in the design of Scotland’s Renewable Energy Investment fund (REIF) and leads for Scottish Government interests in the annual Scottish Low Carbon Investment Conference.

Lynne Ross

Lynne is a business angel, investing in young cleantech businesses that are focused on the low carbon economy. She is an expert in climate change policy at the local, Scottish, UK, European and International levels of governance. Formerly Head of Climate Policy for SSE, Lynne has deep knowledge of the energy sector and extensive practical experience of joint ventures and collaboration for new technology deployment.

Sean Smith

Director, Institute for Sustainable Construction | Napier University

Sean is Professor of Construction Innovation and Director of the Institute for Sustainable Construction based at Edinburgh Napier University. He has worked abroad as an invited guest scientist in government research institutes in Canada (NRC), Italy (IENGF) and Germany (PTB). He has undertaken research projects funded by the Scottish Government, SBSA, Historic Scotland, CLG, Defra and many industry organisations. In 2002-03 he was joint co-Project Manager of the HBF Robust Standards Details Project which between 2004 and 2014 led to over 750,000 UK homes being built incorporating these design details. In 2009 his research team were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for “innovative housing construction for environmental benefit and quality of life”. During 2009-13 he was principal investigator of the Low Carbon Building Technologies Gateway supporting with his research teams over 300 new innovative products and processes for low carbon buildings. In 2012 he was principal investigator for the Scottish government “review into offsite construction” which forecast the strategic growth and importance of this sector to the economy. He has given evidence to various parliamentary committees in relation to carbon reductions, skills, low carbon economy and construction.

During 2010 – 2014 he served on Scottish Construction Forum and the industry leadership group Construction Scotland. He was a founding member of the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI) and led the eleven universities partnership with industry to establish the £7.5 million Construction Scotland Innovation Centre in 2014. He is co-author of 5 patents involving 16 innovative product solutions for acoustic, thermal and structural performance within buildings, which are manufactured in the UK.

Jane Stewart

Strategic Development Director | William Tracey Group

Jane is a CA with over 20 years’ experience in senior finance, private equity and corporate finance roles. Jane joined WTG as Group FD in 2005 and leads the recycling and resource management group’s innovation, technology investment, M&A and strategic alliances. Jane represents WTG on Scotland’s 2020 Group and is a member of the Energy, Innovation and Infrastructure subgroup. Formerly Investment Director at Baird Capital (mid market private equity) she held roles in venture capital at SDF (now Scottish Equity Partners) and in corporate finance at Ernst & Young after qualifying with Grant Thornton. Jane’s key achievements include delivering over 12 acquisitions, alliances and divestments across her 9 years at WTG during which time revenue has grown from £23m to >£60m.

Michael Tracey

Managing Director | William Tracey Group

Michael Tracey is a well know innovator and leader in the field of waste and resource management and features in the Top 100 Entrepreneurs in the UK, 2009. Born in 1961, Michael was brought up in Paisley and educated at St Aloysius, Glasgow. On leaving school, Michael joined his father, William Tracey, in the family business and took over the position of Managing Director of William Tracey Ltd in 1984. Throughout this time Michael has been successful in growing the company from a Tyre Recycling business to a multi faceted Waste and Resources company boasting 10 sites and a number of innovative waste processing and recovery plants. The William Tracey Group now turns over in excess of £50M. Michael holds traditional business values and the personable relationships he has with many of his long term customers and suppliers is key to the success of the business.

His positions within the Environmental business community have included a term as SESA Chairman for 4 years and at a national level, Michael sits on the ESA Board who represent the UK’s waste management and secondary resources industry. In addition, Michael is a committee member of the Scrap Metal Association and was Chair of The Wood Recycling Association for the first 4 years of its existence.

Kate Turner

Legal Director | Pinsent Masons

Kate is a Director of Pinsent Masons and specialises in projects in the energy and natural resources sector.

Kate advises on energy projects (development, construction and financing), trading and regulation. Recent work includes advising on power station (CCGT and CHP) developments, acquisitions/disposals and joint ventures, tolling arrangements, gas transportation and gas storage. Kate has significant experience of advising clients on renewable energy projects; in particular onshore and offshore wind projects, OFTO, anaerobic digestion and biomass projects, new technologies and regulatory matters affecting renewables projects. Kate also regularly advises on UK and European energy trading and credit support arrangements, fuel supply arrangements, grid connection and regulatory issues. Kate is regularly involved in discussion on energy policy and regulation and participates in a number of Scottish Renewables working groups.

Kate is a Governor of Strathallan School and also sits on the 2020 Finance Group.

Martin Valenti

Business Engagement and Climate Change Manager | SEPA

Martin leads on Strategic Partnerships and Business Engagement for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency where he has worked for 10 years in a variety of roles. Martin has extensive experience in all aspects of environmental and regulatory policy and has significant experience in project directing major projects and initiatives. He successfully delivered several major projects for the Scottish Government and more recently was the Project Director for Scotland’s high profile 2020 Climate Group and was instrumental in setting the group up. He has extensive experience working with the highest levels of government and developing high level political and industry focused network contacts, allowing the capturing of key decision makers to help bring about strategic beneficial outcomes.

Martin is a trusted and experienced adviser who builds credibility quickly, excels in creating consensus among divergent groups, and communicates at all levels to manage sensitive issues and negotiate successful outcomes. Martin is a trustee in Helping Hands Associates and spends what free time he has raising funds for a variety of charities or digging his allotment in Comrie in Perthshire.
