WMO Annual Climate Statement highlights extreme events & global weather trends

The World Meteorological Organization has just released its Annual Statement on the Status of the Climate. The year 2013 once again demonstrated the dramatic impact of droughts, heat waves, floods and tropical cyclones on people and property in all parts of the planet. The report confirmed that 2013 tied with 2007 as the sixth warmest on record, continuing the long-term global warming trend. Greenhouse gas emissions: Scotland making ‘good progress’

Scotland has continued to make “good progress” on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the body which advises the UK government on the issue has said. The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) said emissions in Scotland fell by 9.9% in 2011. The drop for the UK as a whole was 6.9%.

Sustained rapid melting of the northeast Greenland ice sheet triggered by regional warming

A new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change shows north-eastern region of Greenland has been losing billions of tons of ice since 2003, raising concerns of faster rising global sea levels as the ‘stable’ Greenland ice sheet starts to melt. Residents to help shape Glasgow’s environment plans

Glasgow residents are being urged to help shape the city’s energy and environment plans. Ideas, comments and information are being sought from people living in the city in the council’s first citizens’ survey on environmental issues. Responses to the online questionnaire will help develop Glasgow’s Energy and Carbon Master Plan.
